I'm afraid your suspicion is right. Given your diabetes, that does change things. The Eden Diet is really more about FEELING your body's messages to you than legalistically being bound up in hunger pangs. Perhaps your body communicates to you via that general malaise you get from your perceived blood sugar drops. If that's the case, then you should speak with your doctor about whether or not it makes more sense to use the malaise as a guide.

Here's my question for you, though, Michelle: are you SURE your blood sugar is low at those times you feel gnarly? Lots of people blame their bad feelings on low blood sugar when their blood sugar isn't really low at all. Have you actually checked it with a glucometer when you feel bad? If the answer is yes (making sure you understand what number is low----ask your doctor to be sure), then perhaps you are right that you should simply eat smaller portions.

You are right about many things. Being 13 years older, your metabolism may be a bit slower, as well. That means you'll have to exercise discipline and eat even smaller portions.

And, yes, especially if you're diabetic, you probably can't get away with eating the same diet you did 13 years ago. Now, fruits will be better than candy bars because the fructose (fruit sugar) keeps your blood sugar level longer than table sugar.

Then again, maybe your insulin resistance will go away or lessen after you lose weight.

I'd say that, overall, you're right about much of what you said. Yes, you will not be able to eat anything you want. Yes, you will have to eat smaller portions than you are currently eating. And, yes, you will have to listen to your body.

My history: about 13 years ago went through and led WDW, lost 60+ pounds. Many pregnancies and losses and years later I am now back to where I started. The difference this time is that I now have blood sugar issues, Insulin Resistance, pituitary issues, and older. I have nine children living, five in heaven. We have made radically good changes as far as quality of food over the years and it seems exercise and reduction in amount of food has not produced weight loss. I have been eating 6 small meals a day (though not small enough:) because of blood sugar crashes. My concern is that I tend to get legalistic with waiting for hunger and put it off and off until I am miserable with dizziness, headaches ect before I finally eat because I didn't really feel a growl. Make sense? I am wondering if I embark on this journey again (similar to WDW only way more grace, concept the same) do I need to be concerned about waiting for a growl verses the 'blood sugar' feeling of crashing?

Would I just eat a tiny amount when I feel the blood sugar drop?

Also, I read so much about not eating too few calories that your body starts to need less and less ect. I am not sure of the validity to this concern, this concept did work for me 13 years ago. I just know that if I ate what I are back then I would have blood sugar issues, my whole testimony was wrapped up in losing 60 lbs. eating pizza and ice cream! I can't see that working for me, nor would I want to eat like that, I do know that healthier food makes me feel better. Sorry to ramble, things in my body have changed so much since 13 years ago and I just want to be sure that this is in the best interest of my health. What would your advice be to diabetics...what until growling or eat when their sugar drops? Please advise, I know this works for most people, does it work for everyone? Regardless of health issues??
Thank you so much, may God bless you.

I just ordered the CD's and the two books. I pray that these help me with my eating issues and underlying issues that cause this so that, God willing, I can help others as well. "Never, never, never give up!" ~ Winston Churchill :-)

Hi Nancy,

Thanks so much for the great news. I'm very proud of you! Your 50-pound weight loss is awesome, but isn't the psychological benefit is even better? Don't you feel incredible joy and freedom now? Praise God!

I noticed you said you lost the weight without much exercise. I'm really surprised that you were able to do that. As you know, the more lean body mass you have the easier it is to lose weight (and keep it off), so I generally advise people to exercise in low-impact ways to augment and/or maintain their loss. Besides, exercise helps you to feel EVEN better! Anyway, I bring that up to tell you that the other women are going to be jealous of your no-exercise weight loss success. Don't be surprised if your house gets tee-peed when they find out(giggling).

Seriously, I'm SO proud of you! You've really done well.

If you want to send before and after pictures, we'll post them on the site (with your permission).

May God continue to bless you in your pursuit of excellent health.

Great! Just remember, Manda, you have to eat small portions. That means no more than half of what you think a normal serving is. If you eat large or even "normal" sized portions, you probably won't lose much weight. Eat just barely enough to take the hunger away!

Hi Kim,

That's a great question. For a female, I'd say about 3/4 cup or so would be a reasonable guesstimate. But, it's not written in stone. If you undershoot and eat too little, you'll be hungry again sooner rather than later. If you eat a little too much, you'll probably stay full a little longer.

Speaking from experience, I'd like to emphasize that it's not worth becoming even the tiniest bit upset with yourself if you've overeaten. Heaven knows we beat ourselves up too much over such things. If you catch yourself falling into that trap, capture those thoughts of self-condemnation and rebuke them with Scripture. Just resolve to eat less at the next meal and move on to better thoughts. Life is short, ya know?

God bless you.

Dr. Hancock, I have been very good about eating only when I'm hungry. I'm a little upset with myself because I'm not sure how much a fist full of food is. I quit eating when I feel a little full. Is a fist full the size of a salad plate or a saucer?

You have mentioned that there are 3 audio CD's that are available, along with the recordings of the "Godly Affirmations." Where can I purchase these items? I glanced over your website and I am unable to find where they are located.

I "used to be" a compulsive eater but thanks to the teachings in this book, I am renewing my mind and learning to put food in it's proper place. I am especially benefitting from the tips on knowing when to stop eating. I am also partnering with Jesus as someone to share my meals with, helping me to overcome my greed and coveteousness with food! Thank you for sharing what God has revealed to you!

I love that this diet tells me what I can do, instead of what I can't do. The positive, uplifting guidance makes me believe that I can get thin! So far I have lost 12 pounds and I am still excited about the program.
